This is a book I had planned on reading during the holiday break, but I accidentally opened the book and decided to read before then.
I will start by saying I enjoyed this book and that it is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
Our heroine is named Astrid a well bred young woman who is of a certain age and due to a scandal that occurred during her very first season she is also a spinster. She has a younger sister who is sixteen years old and she is the reason why our heroine goes in search of our hero.
Our hero is Thane, he once was in the army and being a second son he wasn't supposed to inherit a title but he becomes a duke. During he war he was left for dead and due to how horrible his wounds were he is left horribly scarred, and then comes home and society of course is calling him a beast/monster.
The two main characters meet and he is immediately attracted to her but because no woman would ever look at him and want him. They argue with each other, he is really crude and rude but he enjoys that Astrid does not back down. She in turn enjoys his rather unorthodox manners and really enjoys their bantering.
I stated before I enjoyed the book but I did not love it. I do not find it believable that the heroine would act the way she did in society, in private that's another matter, but knowing how the high society was back then and how she was trying to protect her sister's reputation or at least have other members of society accept the young woman. Astrid did so much that would have done more harm than good for her sister and for herself.
Thane was a war vet with a lot of hang ups, he was psychologically messed up and physically scarred but even knowing his last family member accepts him as he is and his wife does too he still acts rather dumb.
This is the first book in the Everleigh sister's duology (possible series) and I will read the younger sister book when it is published.
