Old M & B where the h's parent dies while saving H from a fire when they were lttle

I am trying to look up this book for many days.  When the h and H were little, a fire accident happens at a hotel and h's parent dies in it while saving the H. The H's dad takes care of h out of gratitude but H mistakes it thinking his dad is interested in this girl romantically. After they grow up h is working at a magazine called something like "Eve's Apple" or some such thing.  H gifts her a paperweight shaped like an apple. Really appreciate if any of you remember this book. Thanks.
