The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld #1) - by Gena Showalter
Mari's overview....WOW!
Immortal warriors were created by the Greek gods. One of the warriors, Pandora, was chosen to be guardian of the box that imprisoned the worst of the Demon Lords made from the bones of the Goddess of Oppression. Thirteen of the warriors were envious of Pandora's position and decided to take the box from her. Lucien, the captain of the warriors opened the box releasing the demons. Maddox killed Pandora. As punishment the gods cursed the warriors to become hosts for the escaped demons and were cast out of Olympus. For killing Pandora an additional curse was put on Lucien, Maddox and Reyes. Every night at midnight Reyes stabs Maddox 6 times, replicating Pandora's death wounds, then Lucien takes Maddox's soul to hell. In the morning Maddox wakes only to relive the experience again and again.
Throughout history the warriors have been targeted by mortal hunters who believe if they kill the warriors they'll banish all sin. Over a 1000 years ago they were successful and killed the possessed warrior Baden. Soon after Baden's death and the bloody retribution that followed the remaining 12 warriors split up. Six warriors possessed by Doubt, Disaster, Misery, Defeat, Lies and Secrets chose to continue warring with the hunters. Those possessed by Death, Violence, Pain, Wrath, Promiscuity and Disease abandoned the fight to find what peace they could.
In The Darkest Night Lucien, keeper of Death; Maddox, keeper of Violence; Reyes, keeper of Pain; Paris, keeper of Promiscuity; Aeron, keeper of Wrath and Torin, keeper of Disease try to live peacefully in a castle in Budapest. Many locals consider them angels for their philanthropic and charitable donations. Ashlyn Darrow is a human trying to deal with her own ability. She can be in one location and hear every past conversation ever spoken there. She works for the Institute of Parapsychology not knowing that it's really a front for hunters to locate and capture paranormal creatures. While in Budapest she hears stories about the men who live in the castle. Hoping for help to ease her own ability she ventures to the castle. There's instant attraction between Ashlyn and Maddox. Initially, neither one trusts the other. Both are lonely and a bit naive when it comes to relationships but they made a cute couple. With the help of the Goddess of Anarchy, Maddox and Ashlyn break his death curse and find their happy ending.
The warriors from Budapest are reunited with the other six. Together they learn that the hunter’s strategy has changed. They want Pandora's Box hoping they can kill the warriors then imprison the demons again. The warriors join forces in a quest to find Pandora's Box before the hunters do.
Each book centers on a specific warrior as he struggles with his demon lord and finds romance, acceptance and love with the one woman who can ease his torment. I like that there's so much more going on with the story than just a romance. The continuing story arc is interesting and the characters well developed. There's plenty of humor and suspense.

Mari did a fabulous job of introducing us to the guys and the storyline of The Darkest Night. There was a lot of information within the first full novel to absorb. I do have to admit when books have a lot of characters I take notes in the beginning to refer back to.
I simply wanted to add, that because of Ashlyn Darrow's ability to be in a location and hear conversations (past and present) she’s hoping to find a way to control it, and thinks that ability resides in the castle in Budapest. When she’s found, the warriors think she’s bait, being used by the Hunters to get information to infiltrate the castle and kill them. Little did she know she was being used by the one man she trusted, Dr. McIntosh. The one man who took her in at the age of 5 when her parents couldn’t handle her “voices” anymore. She lived in the Institute, where he worked, where she was tested and used to find other paranormal creatures. In the end she ends up being used herself. The one person who seems to truly care about her is Maddox, who’s demon is Violence.
Here’s a fun fact I was drawn to as the story developed. Other than the food Ashlyn ate when the wine made her sick, did anyone feed that girl, or the other 4 women who were held captive?
Gena Showalter is a good story teller. She had a lot of information to impart and did a well doing so.
