I liked Homebound quite a bit and will re-read (or parts of it) again. Gemma was raised on The Islands in a comfortable family and planned to be a dancer. Natural and man made disasters ruined the Islands. An ankle injury dashed Gemma's hope of dancing. With no family left Gemma is living in squalor with distant relatives. Anyone that can come up with the money wants to leave earth. Gemma helped her doctor boyfriend leave earth and is waiting for him to arrange her passage to the colony. She was gently stilted. She works in a prison and was transferred to the alien floor where she helps feed and clean up after the aliens. Some are no more than animals so the cleaning is never ending. The work and the conditions are very hard. With jobs few and far between Gemma keeps her head down and does what she's told. There she meets alien inmate Simon who's slowly dying of neglect and starvation. Gemma with her heart of gold decides to do what she can to save him. Very few Rix have ever been on earth and little is known about them. As Gemma nurses Simon back to health they grow closer and she learns more about the Rix and their warrior ways. Simon had been experimented on by an insane doctor and isn't very fond of humans. Gemma knows the only way to save him is to get him off the planet. I liked Gemma, she was brave and wasn't a whiner. A bit of a Pollyanna though. Girl has the worst luck. she's not a doormat but could have stood up for herself more. IMO some of Gemma's trials could have been omitted. It's just one bad thing after another for this girl and it never lets up until the very end. The physiology and psychology of Simon, a Rix Defender was interesting. The Rix are cool warriors and Simon was a total bad*ss. I'd read another story about the Rix. I thought the book was well written with very few editing issues. It's currently part of KU as well.
