Hideaway - Nora Roberts
Well, that was disappointing. To be fair, I haven't been excited about a book for quite a while now so that may be coloring this a bit.
I love JD Robb. I am consistently underwhelmed by Nora Roberts.
With this book in particular, first off there are way too many characters. Like an overwhelming amount of people in this book to keep straight. The h's family alone has 4 generations at one point and that also includes a variety of stepparents, etc. and every one is given plenty of page time which translates into a very bland, boring romance that barely even happens. The H seemed like a nice guy but with so many other characters lying around, he really wasn't overly involved and is very one dimensional. I am reading a romance for the romance, not to learn how to milk cows, make cheese and butter, and do voice over acting! There is so much description of everything but the H and h and their relationship. The step grandmother of the h ( I think that is who she was, it got jumbled sometimes) and her amazing broadway career actually could have been left out completely and would not have been missed. Not to mention there were at least 6 other characters who could have slipped into her spot and trimmed a tiny bit of fat. And if one of the characters (or 3 or 4, however many there were) is going to be the bad guy, have her do more than swan about and give press conferences trying to make the h look bad. That was a let down, I kept waiting for her to do something and she never did. Why even bother with her once past the set up? The only real action was in the first 5% and last 5% maybe? and that was rushed and sloppy and then over. And I may not be remembering right but I am pretty sure Nora Roberts has another book or maybe even two with the same child of celebrities, past h drama with parents, long build up to H and h actually being a couple and separated for most of the story, etc. similar type of storyline. I could be wrong on that but this felt old and repeated. 2 out of 4 for me.
