Does anyone else find that many times it's the negative reviews that make you want to read a book? Often times, the very thing that someone else hates, I look for in books.
"The H was too controlling". Click! "The H was a stalker!" Click! "The H was too possessive." Click! Click! Click! - lol.

That's funny. When I read reviews, I read the 1 stars and the 3 stars. I figure they are the most honest ones.
I agree. If I don't know the reviewer, I skip right over 5 star reviews. Even a 4 star review seems more honest although I have personally given many 5 stars reviews myself - lol.

I know. I don't even read the 5***** ones. Most of the time those are just sychophants.
Though the keywords Samantha K used were right on. I love those types of h's. I would one-click too.
I'm in good company then. 😉
On a side note - has anyone noticed how different books are today than they used to be? It's like the majority of books today have H's that are pc beta's. I can't stand them and assume many don't like them either or why would the Ammy jealous/possessive thread be so popular? (Oh & my J/P FB group has 457 members in almost 3 months and other than the initial posts, I'm not advertising our group.) I'm thinking there are a lot of us out there who want the old school, non-pc j/p H's. It makes me wonder if the big publishing houses haven't pushed for the more pc H's. Just a thought.
Samantha K-- I'm with you on the pc beta heroes. Can't stand them at all. I find that I'm buying less and less from the major publishers and more from the indy pubs. I'm thinking that might be one of the reasons.

I always head straight for the 1 and 2 star reviews. I ignore all reviews (pos or neg) that are just one sentence. I don't give fig for your opinion if you can't take the time to explain it to me! Give me reasons for your opinion and I'll consider it.
If the neg reviews are about things I would also hate then I move on. If the complaints are things like too much sex, too possessive, too long. Then I start to look further. Then I'll read some of the more detailed positive reviews to see if I might like it.
My biggest problem with a lot of the self pubbed ( or even indy pubbed) stuff is a lack of editing. Some authors I'll read anyway because I like the story, but most of the time a lack of editing spoils the story for me. My OCD pops out and I start adding notes with corrections. Blech. Unpaid editing does not equal reading for enjoyment. If an author can't be bothered to edit their work then they don't deserve my money!

Yes. A good editor can make or break a book. It's not just grammatical mistakes but many times the story itself. A good editor can help focus an author and get rid of a lot of unnecessary junk that detracts from the story (think Scarlett Dawn) or clarify things that need clarifying. A good editor can make a good book amazing!
I also find that the 1 and 2 star reviews are more likely to have spoilers. This is good and bad for me because I want to know if there is cheating but I don't want an entire synopsis of the story. Sadly, many books have been ruined for me because of this but I can't seem to stop myself from reading the reviews....lol
I discount all the 5 star reviews. I tend to look at 3 star cause they will admit to not liking certain issues that may not be a problem for me but they aren't blowing sunshine up everyone's ass that this is the BEST book they have ever read!!! Really? You should read more cause it's obviously the only book you have ever read.

Samantha K hahaha YES I TOTALLY DO! I am a sucker for angst and bad reviews.
Though I must say, some of these bad reviews, do turned out not so bad at all.

Yes, but oftentimes it backfires on me. I've read one star reviews that complained that there was too much sex in a book, only to find out that the scenes cut out as soon as the going gets good.
