WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! Not a lot, but enough.
My SIL lent me this book before she reads it herself.
If anyone has read the book The Contract by Melanie Moreland, this is the daughter of Katy and Richard from that particular series. It also interconnects with the Vested Interest series as their children also make an appearance here as friends of the heroine who is named Grace.
Grace and Jaxson meet when Grace is hired as a paid intern for his law firm, she's an articling student going into copyright law. Jaxson is immediately attracted to Grace, though he sort of tries to hide it. He keeps away for a while, but one night Grace stays late and he takes her home from that night on they become closer until one day he just cannot stop what he and she have been fighting for a while.
Grace has her mother's calm and easy demeanor but she has her father's self assurance and attitude when it comes down to it she's a great mix of her parents and does not take any disrespect from her boss, Jaxson. She tells it as she sees it but she also tries different methods to get done what she needs to do. When Jaxson tries to make her face a certain fear, and goes about it the wrong way she calls him out on his arrogance and even though she lost her temper, and she had no way of knowing that his highhandedness came from worry not just arrogance, she does later apologize. He does too. He actually admits when he's wrong, and apologizes.
Jaxson though older than Grace by ten years reads as less emotionally mature than her. It does show that their childhood and the way they were raised influences how they see their future as well as how they react to certain emotions. What Grace is ready for is not what Jaxson is ready for. There is also the small but very important detail that as her boss and not a partner of the law firm he cannot date an intern or lawyer, which has him and Grace hiding their new relationship, it's also what strains it and then leads to a rather ugly break-up.
It's an easy read, more of an instant lust to love sort of story than the usual slow-burn I am used to from Melanie Moreland.
I did not like how Jaxson reacted and the things he said to Grace once he made the decision of breaking up with her, and his reasons and terrible explanation could have gone differently but he made a wrong choice and that leads to misunderstandings between the two of them.
I loved how similar Richard and Jaxson were, and I loved reading about Richard and how much a great dad he is and how much he has grown emotionally from his own books. It was great to see and also funny how Grace married a man so very similar to her dad.
The relationship between Richard and Jaxson was also good, Richard loved taking shots at Jaxson and Jaxson was the same way with Richard.
The book is fun, has likeable characters, the one thing that was lacking on was certain interactions but it did not take away from me enjoying the book and believing that these two would be happy for the rest of their lives together.
It's a three and a half star to four star read for me.
