Well, I received 3 emails from authors I follow letting me know that if I pre-order their upcoming releases they will have exclusive content. If I purchase the books after the release date that content will not be in my copy? Why? How does this make sense? So they create two different books for release at different times?
Why is the "Exclusive content" not part of the story?
I am tired of finishing a book and on the last page they have a link to get "bonus content" which 9 times out of 10 doesn't add to the storyline.
Why are the authors doing this?
from an author's page on facebook: Remember, the preorder copy of Stolen will include the bonus epilogue inside the book

Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true.

All good points. The 'bonus content' on author's website, IMO, seems boring or does not wrap up loose ends.

I can't say for sure those authors are doing this, but many self pub authors learned long ago how to game the system to get their new releases on "best seller" lists. All preorders are not recorded as sales until the book actually releases, and those preorders get added to the sales made during that first week. If authors can drum up enough preorders, it will boost their self pubbed book into the competitive sales numbers with trad pub books.
This is why I no longer have any trust or confidence in the title of "best selling author" or in the best seller lists put out by various companies, including the NYT. A self pub author, especially, claiming to be a best seller makes suspicious, instead of trusting it will be a good book.
Some authors give you a new short story, or send you a gift or a goodie box. As much as I sometimes want to be like 'ooh, sure let's do it.' I also look at the cons of it, what if I don't like the book in the end? Or what if the exclusive content was something that wasn't needed. Or if like it's a bonus epilogue and all we get is them ten years in the future all happy and whatnot, which is great but let be honest is it worth it?
But it could all depend on the author and how great he/she, they/them write a story and how invested we are in it.
Va. Valley University. This was a CR series of I believe 4 books.
#4 had a HFN ending. I read on the author's GR profile that she would tie up loose ends in this VVU series in a whole new series. I commented that this seemed dishonest. Several weeks ago (?) I got an email from the author that gave a link where we could learn the outcome of the 4 young men in the VVU series as far as the NFL draft & each man's love life.
Doubtful I'd read this author again. Her original intent to tie up VVU series seemed manipulative.
I do have to say that there is one bonus-type vignette I love. Thea Harrison wrote some very brief slice-of-life type stories for her Elder Races series and published them on her website. One is about Dragos and Pia, when Dragos meets Niall the first time by entering Pia's dream. It's cute and funny. There are other stories about some of the other couples, but this is my favorite.
