Mary Bennet was 'bookish' and played the piano well. She felt plain and not witty or
clever compared to her 4 sisters. What did she have to offer a man? Her father required
total silence when she joined him in his study to read. Fast-forward two years- Mary was
the only single Bennet sister left.
Mary had two advocates- Mrs. Hill, the Bennet's servant & Mrs. Gardiner, her aunt by
marriage who lived in London (w/ spouse and kids). Mary became houseguest of the
Gardiners. Mrs. G showed her good listening skills and wanted Mary to make her own
decisions for her future.
Mary met Thomas Hayward, a bright, witty, young solicitor when out w/ Aunt Gardiner.
Tom was a friend of the family. She later met Tom's self-involved friend Ryder (equivalent
to a modern 'trust fund' baby) who kept inviting himself to the Gardiner family home.
Ryder included in his circle Miss Caroline Bingley and her sister and BIL the Hursts. Ryder
and Caro after a time grated on my nerves.
With time, Mary appreciated her own uniqueness & felt more comfortable when socializing
with others. Mary visited sister Jane & spouse, sister Lizzy and spouse & friend Charlotte
who'd married obsequious and condescending curate Mr. Collins. And finally the Gardiners.
Mary felt the warmth, happiness, and love in the Gardiner home. Mary learned to become
her best self.
My favorite scenes? Mary asserting herself w/ Caro & later her own mother. Mom needed
a big chill-pill.
