England 1814. Story involved a MOC. Gave this 3 of 5 stars.
The hero, a former Army Captain and 2nd son of an earl was a good man, but moody and unpredictable.
He had war-related nightmares. He assured the h he was moody before the war & moodier after the war.
Shy Phyllida "Philly" was raised in the country by her late grandfather. She went to live in London w/ financier
Uncle Edgar, his picky widowed sister & his quarrelsome daughters. She felt hemmed in by those relatives.
Philly had auburn hair, 1 brown eye and the other blue: an unconventional beauty. She dearly loved her 4
rescue dogs, she carried the lame dog. She met former Army Captain, Arthur Heywood, via her uncle,
in the middle of uncle's business meeting. Art was lame and easily fatigued (a war injury).
Uncle matched Philly with a duke about 60, who abused his dogs. Uncle & duke arranged a marriage contract
w/o Philly's knowledge or consent. 23 yr old Philly turned down the duke!! Later uncle threatened to destroy
her dogs if she didn't change her mind!!! She asked Art to adopt her dogs, but he suggested a MOC instead.
They wed. Art overreacted at times to keep Philly safe. He took too long to explain the danger to her. She
feared she was hemmed in again? My fav. scene? Philly put Art's former intended 'in her place.'
