A Regency re-read. The prologue took place in 1805, and the rest in 1816 London.
This was bk#1 of a 4 part series. IMO this was the best of the 4bk. series. 4 of 5 stars.
Neglected and malnourished Aunt Beatrice was the heart and soul of this book. At 18, Bea's nephew Max
became Lord Davenham (a baron), upon the death of her husband. Max told no one his uncle was deeply
in debt. Max made a deal to wed a cit's daughter upon his return to England. Max went to India and China
and became a part owner (of 4 men total) of a trading co. (owners of 5 ships) which lead to his erasing
uncle's debts & securing a lucrative future. Max trusted his man of business to ensure Aunt Bea's comfort
while Max was away. 9 years on, Max returned to England.
Abigail, whose late sire was gentry, was reunited w/ her beautiful, younger sister Jane & she rescued Jane.
2 other women Damaris & Daisy joined them. They felt like 4 sisters. The 4 lived in a bldg. soon to be
demolished. Aunt Bea caught Abby in her home, intending to steal from her. Bea's room looked gloomy
and dusty, her food the same old, and Bea did not get out of bed. Her staff of 12 did not see to her needs
IE she badly needed a bath. Abby returned to Bea with hearty soup, and summoned a physician to examine
Bea. Bea invited the 4 women to move in w/ her. Abby subsequently stood up to Bea's staff, falsely claiming
the 4 women were Bea's nieces. Bea + the 4 ladies developed a tight bond.
The something hit the fan when Max ret'd to England 1 year early. Max & Abby met and acted rude and
accusatory toward each other. Abby called herself and the 3 women "the Chance sisters" to avoid a rotter
in Jane's past. The MCs talked/ flirted/ argued/ tried to ignore each other. Max learned Abby was not the
schemer he assumed she was. IMO a good read.

Now I'm older than he was in the book and 39 year old H wouldn't be so bad now lol.
