England, Spring 1880. Gave this 3.5 stars. This had humor and love.
Alcott & Townsend wanted to merge their import businesses, via the marriage of their
respective offspring, Lauren & Rafe. The 2 became engaged, but barely knew each other.
One day he rowed her on the water, she noticed 2 nearly drowned ladies & rescued them.
Rafe just sat in the row-boat & didn't enter the water. She publicly called Rafe "a coward"
and broke their engagement. Their parents shamed the MCs into pretending they liked
each other & to start over. The media exaggerated the story. The hero thought she was
curvy and half-mad. She thought of Rafe as "Mr. Tall, Fair & Arrogant."
The adventure aspect lagged & then I gained interest. This involved tariffs + a dockside
riot. And abduction goings on (not a fav. trope). I counted 3 baddies. Street urchin Jims
was wise beyond his years, observant and loyal. I wanted the MCs to find a legit job for
Jims, his mother & sibs.
The author gradually changed the MCs from indifferent or hostile toward each other to
admiration and respect. And love. A bonus- Rafe loved her first.
