RITA winner in 1993.
North Carolina Confederate prison and elsewhere. Jan. 1865, onward.
This had a poor, hungry Southerner, Amanda, who met a well-healed Union Captain,
John Howe. Amanda lived w/ her preachy Rev father & her sweet/ thoughtful stepmom,
Verilea. John's mother had political ambitions for him. I liked the 1st sex scene, best.
IMO 4 stars.
John was stuck in a military prison x 8 months. He was kept in the dark, underfed and
had disrupted sleep. I understood his grumpy ways. He and some men escaped using
an underground tunnel. His friend Max was too ill to leave.
John broke into the Rev's house, looking for a contact person and food. He found
Amanda instead. The Rev joined them- he and Rev struggled with a pistol. Both were
shot. Was the Rev dead? John grabbed Amanda and the gun & found the correct
contact, in another abode, who gave him cash and a Confederate uniform. John told
her: cooperate or I'll shoot.
Long story short those 2 had challenges on the train ride north. He promised once
safely up north, he'd buy her a train ticket to Richmond. The Rev had called Amanda
a 'wh---' and John wondered- was this true? He had carnal thoughts about her.
This was more angsty than I usually prefer, but I enjoyed the deep love. Especially
b/c John was a flirt and woman-collector.
