A small village in England Feb 1818. IMO an original story. Had heart, humor,
love & good dialogue. Both MCs felt vulnerable. Gave this 4 stars.
Rafe had been an army officer and war hero at Waterloo. Some called him
"a blond Adonis." He inherited an earldom when his unknown, wealthy,
cousin died. Rafe had younger brother Archie, charming/ curious/ somewhat
mentally slow. Both men did not mingle w/ others. Rafe planned to sell his
new country home and move on.
Sophie 10 yrs. ago moved in w/ her spinster Aunt Jemima in this small village.
Each woman had a back history with a man. Sophie was disowned by her sire.
The 2 ladies grew close.
Rafe had a right to sell his country home but members of the village, w/
Sophie as leader, decided to block prospective buyers from viewing the
property. As tenants, the village people wanted a responsible landlord. The
late earl had failed as a LL.
The MCs had a complex relationship. At times they were at loggerheads &
at others they had sex (she seduced him!). The village lady sewing circle
shared thoughts and gossip. They emotionally supported each other.
One woman chimed in: women needed sex as much as men! One woman
widowed 3 times, alluded to her enjoyable amorous attn from these 3.
Occasionally women talk this way & the author captured the moment.
The MCs took a chance on each other.
The characters and 2 pets contributed to an interesting story.
Book #2 features wise, huge farmer Ned, described as "built like a tree."
