Scotland, early 1200s. This had sex scenes. Gave this 2 stars.
Pointless arguments. Couples argue in real life, as in fiction. This couple Egan & Glenda exchanged
small & large verbal skirmishes. They made cruel remarks to each other. Why? They both needed
to count their blessings & grow the heck up.
Glenda decided to part from friends Cameron & Meredith. He was Laird of the MacKay clan & Glenda the
widow of Cam's brother Niall. They wed 8 years prior. She'd been widowed x 3 years. She wanted to
return to her castle in the Lowlands. She verbally ruminated too much about Niall. Later Egan joined in
on this, as she verbalized that Niall had been nearly perfect. Enough about Niall- this was not 'his' story!
Suspension of disbelief. Cam ordered Egan to escort Glenda to her castle. He was her only escort, no maid
or companion accompanied her to preserve her reputation. No small group of warriors. MCs could have
been ambushed on the road.
Reality. Glenda discovered her castle in ill-repair, & she had a low supply of stored food. Those who defended
her castle from harm, fled, as did tenant farmers.
Baddies. Who led the band of bad men near her castle? They burned crops and cottages & drove tenant
farmers away. His assignment as escort/ protector ended, but he couldn't leave Glenda defenseless. We
learned one of her men: partially deaf and blind. Another man, Egan's rival for the heroine, was an alleged
rotter, visited her and complimented her.
Angst. This had too much angst for me. The arguments & repetition exhausted me. After the midway point, I
doubted the MCs deserved a HEA. Why make the MCs obnoxious for so much of the story? They seemed
more compatible in sexy scenes than in other scenes. They both needed to listen & not assume bad things
about each other. And to read non-verbal cues. I lost interest about the MCs.
My fav. character? Nessa, Glenda's former childhood nurse, who'd yrs. ago (in her heart) loved a man who
wed another.
