Cottonwood also has a very alien hero. For some reason, this is the hardest of her books to read for me. All of hers can get dark but this seems the most - realistic? - if that makes any sense. It's just heartbreaking.

I agree. Cottonwood was amazing. So far, everything I've read by R. Lee Smith has been superb. She's an amazing writer.
I love this author. Azrael and Meoraq are in my top-10 heroes. I like HEAT too, and I haven't read Cottonwood. I'm not so sure about wanting to read it, but I know I will. Someday, because, duh, she's R. Lee Smith and she makes you love her heroes, even if they're weird AF and lizardmen.
Sherry - They're really different but the writing & story telling is amazing. I can't recommend this author highly enough. Maybe read the preview and see what you think. My absolute favorite is Land of the Beautiful Dead followed by Last Hour of Gahn.

Dennie - In a way, yes it is slow initially. (I wasn't bored, however.) The author is setting the foundation for this story. R.Lee Smith writes really different stories. It's like an "experience" reading her books. If you go into one of her books expecting the typical romance (at a typical romance pace) you will initially be disappointed and question all our sanity. Trust me, stick with it. I think you'll be surprised.
With Last Hour of Gahn, for me it was the STORY that was so amazing. With Land of the Beautiful Dead (one of my top favorite books - ever) it was the story AND the romance. They both have romance in them, I'm just saying the romance in Land enthralled me more. (Beauty and the Beast trope.) I actually sobbed out-freaking-loud reading the "river" scene. It was extremely touching and of course had the perfect HEA.
