I think there are a few members here who pay to join the Brooklyn Public Library. Looks like they are no longer allowing out of state memberships. My cousin sent me this:
As of July 15, 2022, Brooklyn Public Library is no longer offering its fee-based out-of-state library card. Our priority remains serving Brooklynites and assuring that they can access the materials they need in a timely manner. BPL Library cards remain free for anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes or attends school in New York State. Existing out-of-state accounts will remain active until their expiration date and will not be renewable.
. I'm sorry the Brooklyn Public Library had to discontinue out of state digital loans for people who were enjoying the privilege. I suppose these days it usually comes down to a financial issue in the cost (or lack of profit) to continue the program. Perhaps residents of the state were also complaining about the competition to get to materials first and finding that they were waiting in the queue for long periods of time for the latest or most popular items.

We ran into that with teaching faculty--the university libraries are members of a statewide system--all university & college libraries participating & materials lend between them. Several of our faculty members were complaining when new materials went out on loan to other colleges, etc because those folks put a hold on the order. Of course, our people could have done the same but... We considered blocking order records and new materials up to a month after receipt from the statewide system--visible only to our folks, but that was not in line with the policies of the collective--and then they'd want 2 months, etc. I think they learned to check more quickly!
I found this post on Book Riot from Feb 2023 that lists libraries still allowing out-of-state memberships. I definitely want to check into them because I have been using BPL for years. bookriot.com/out-of-state-library-cards/

When I was in college 100 yrs ago, the grad-asses (my name for them) had first dibs for books & articles at Ohio University's Alden library. Once they got the materials, they renewed them. So the rest of us underlings seldom obtained what we needed.

mlover, grad students can check the materials out for a semester but if someone else requests them, willing to put a hold on the title & the grads have had it for at least 3 wks, it is recalled. If they don't return the item when recalled, they get multiple recalls with notice about the hefty, growing, fine. We've even been known to contact their supervising faculty member if they continue to ignore us. Can't swear it always works but we do give it a try. Faculty can check out for a year & renew without return but again, if requested by someone else, it is recalled.
When I worked Interlibrary Loan, one faculty member renewed the borrowed materials as many times as allowed & still wouldn't return them, despite the notices. I finally typed up a note, went to his study carrel in the library, gathered the books, left the note & prepped those books for return superfast. When I came back to my desk after taking them to shipping, he was there & breathing fire. How dare I do that! My boss backed me because we could lose borrowing privileges with that university if it kept up & happily, the Dean backed me as well. That faculty member didn't talk to me for a couple of years but that was okay--I didn't like him anyway. One of those that always thought the rules didn't apply to him!

Your boss & the Dean were supportive? Great! On another topic, my late bro was hired as an ice cream store mgr. He took out public library books on ice cream. A few years on, he moved to Atlanta. When I discovered his lib books, I was prepared to pay a hefty fine, but they claimed no fine, due to my honesty.
Did you all hear that allegedly 8 US House members helped insurrectionists plan to breach the Capitol bldg on 1/6/21? If true, these 8 should be expelled from Congress.

mlover, can you tell me where you read this? I (briefly) looked for this and didn't see it. (But I have my nephew visiting this week 🙂, so I've not been following the news closely nor had much time to search.)
My computer co. Alta Fiber (formerly Cinti Bell) has news updates from AP, Newser etc.
Yesterday the news update was from Veuer, as written in Rolling Stone magazine. It concerned the 8 from Congress: US House members. RS sometimes lets consumers read their articles on-line.
I Googled about the 8 in Congress and found a link to PBS News Hour for 10/25/21 revealing "GOP lawmakers were 'intimately involved' in Jan. 6 protest planning, new report shows." Then they referenced RS mag.

Has anyone ever had a problem with an Amazon credit promotional? I bought 3 items, one on one day and 2 together on another day. The first one I was advised if I delayed shipping to my Prime delivery day rather than a much sooner date I'd receive a $1.50 credit. I agreed as it was no big deal and I can always use $1.50 towards an ebook. I received an email when the item shipped that the $1.50 credit was applied to my account. I bought an on sale book for $0.99 and part of the $1.50 credit was used so I had $0.51 left, no problem. A couple of days later I bought a couple of items and again I was advised this time I'd receive a $2.25 promotional credit to delay shipping. Again, I agreed to delay shipping. The items shipped and an email was received that the $2.25 credit was applied to my account. Today I bought an ebook on sale for $1.99 and they only deducted the $0.51 and didn't use the $2.25 credit towards the price. When I contacted Amazom, which is a pain in the neck, I was given the run around. I've decided to have my items shipped when they state they will rather wait for my Prime delivery day and get the promotional credits. Not worth the aggravation.

I've had times when the credit wasn't applied to the price, other times I didn't get the credit it was advertising that I would recieve. I think I finally gave up, buy what I'm going to buy when I want to & if it happens, hallelujah! The one for selecting a shipping date to get credit--sometimes that credit only applies to buying music electronically or something like that; & I find out after I do the process to get it. Yeah, can't trust them any farther than I can throw them some days!
