name of historical previous hero is bad guy - solved!

Ok, I thought about it a bit more so hopefully this makes it clearer.

There are two books that I know of, the original I did not read but ends with H and h married with HEA.
Second book which I did read has possibly brother or some relative of H from the first book as H and involves someone plotting against the HEA for the 2nd couple. Eventually find out near the end that the bad guy is the H from the original book who appears genuinely bad (possibly cheating on his h, maybe treason of some sort?). He knows he has been found out so he runs, leaving his h (who has no clue about any of this) and child behind with no explanation for what he apparently was doing. I have a vague memory that the h from the first book leaves to search him out but that could be wrong. Second book ends with HEA for second couple and first couple broken.

Both are historical and this is several years old. I remember at the time of reading wondering if there would be another book to explain what the first H was doing and why but then lost track of it so there may be a third book out there. Not much clearer but all I have!

Holy !!! I need to know the name of this book/series. That sounds awful.

Yes! I kept looking at the worst betrayal thread at amazon for it but it never showed up (or I didn't recognize it) and I never got around to asking about it

You want Thea Devine's   sensation  and satisfaction -- satisfaction is the first one and sensation is the one where the first H goes bad.

I am off to check these out!  Fingers crossed you are right!

Despite the one star review, for more than 300 pages I was really enjoying this read. It was so unusual, with such a dream-like quality. This is not at all the typical romantic suspense, and I found the surreal mood fascinating. But then, Devine pulled the rug out from under me so thoroughly that I feel completely cheated. (Spoiler alert--I'm going to reveal the big surprise ending.)



At the very end, Devine reveals that a character the reader has become very fond of--especially if she has read Satisfaction, in which this character is the hero--is a truly despicable, skin-crawling villain. I felt as devastated as the hero of this book, which granted made for a very effective, emotional scene. But this is not the effect I'm looking for in a romance novel!! If this novel had not been labled a romance (and if this villain hadn't been the hero of a previous book), I probably would have applauded Devine's ability to provoke a reaction in the reader. As it is, I wish I'd never invested the emotional energy in this book.



Although I enjoyed Devine's writing, I will never read another of her books because I feel I can't trust her to give me the happily-ever-after ending I expect in a romance. (Yes, the hero and heroine end up together, but because of the hero's brother's betrayal, it feels very much unlike HEA!) What a disappointment.

Definitely the right pair of books but I can't seem to find if there was ever a third?  Soooo glad it was solved!  And now I remember why I didn't really like it very much!  I am doing a happy dance everywhere!
