Need help finding post apocalyptic EMP - possibly NA book

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me with this book search. I've been looking for an ebook that I only read the blurb and look inside feature for over on Amazon. Dummy me didn't think to put it on my wish list or download the sample. 
IIRC, the book is set either in California or the Pacific northwest. The sample chapter has the h, who is a college student, in a greenhouse on campus talking to a friend, who is male, but not, I think, a romantic interest. She is trying to persuade the friend into going home with her for the semester break, possibly Thanksgiving holiday. I think both of them may be agricultural students. I seem to remember something about the h's family owning a vineyard or farm. I'm really fuzzy on this part, but I think the H's mother may be a stay at home mom, and her dad is supposed to be flying home for the holiday. I'm not sure if he is a pilot or simply returning home from a business trip. I seem to remember there being some concern on the h's part that he might not make it home on time. As they are talking, another friend comes rushing into the greenhouse and tells them he can't get any service on his cell phone and that the radio and tv stations are broadcasting very sporadically. This friend, who seems to be a tech savvy science nerd, tells them that there is some concern over an approaching solar flare that could possibly wipe out all communications and electronic devices. The h is now very worried that her dad's flight might be endangered as this could cause the plane to crash. By the end of the sample, all three characters decide to set out to either get to the H's house or to try to get up with her father. I also seem to remember that the h might (very fuzzy on this point) have a younger s sibling at home with her mother.
I know this isn't a lot to go on, but I really hope one of our members knows this book. It had a very intriguing beginning, and I really wish that I bought it back when I read the sample. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
