I've always purchased my books from Amazon so I'd be notified if I already had the book -- and because some authors only publish at Amazon. But I'm kind of disgusted with them right now so I'd like to find an alternative source for books.
Have any of you tried Kobo? If I buy from them, is it only in an epub format? Or worse, pdf? Or can I ask for a mobi file so I can read it on my Paperwhite if I want? I know people have talked about converting files using Calibre so could that be an option? Would Kobo tell me if I've already purchased the book?
Sorry for all the questions. I know the easy thing to do would be to keep purchasing from Amazon but I just don't want to give them any more of my money!
Oh, wait, I've thought of another question -- is there another place to keep my wish lists?
Oh and one more -- I thought I saw a sign in my local neighborhood bookstore that if I bought through Kobo and tagged the bookstore, they'd get credit. Was I dreaming that? I called the bookstore a few months ago and the woman I asked thought I was crazy (which maybe I am).
I've never owned a Kobo device, LTR, but Kobo books are ePub format just as Nook and Sony (when Sony made e-readers) are/were. I have some Kobo books because when the Sony bookstore closed (after the company stopped making e-readers), all of the books were transferred over to the Kobo bookstore. I haven't logged on there in ages because I don't have an ePub reader anymore. Back in 2010 I bought an inexpensive (for that time) PRS-300 Sony e-reader so that I could check out library books. As soon as Amazon and the libraries got Kindle book borrowing up and running, I stopped borrowing ePub books. I am considering checking out Kobo e-readers though, since occasionally there's a library book I want to read that is available only in ePub and I hate reading books on my iPad mini or my Fire HD6.
You cannot legally convert Kobo books from ePub to mobi if they have DRM because stripping DRM is one of the changes that is against terms of service (at least at Amazon and I'm assuming at Kobo as well). Yes, if you buy from the Kobo bookstore, it's ePub format only, which is not compatible with any e-ink Kindle device (on a Fire you can use various ePub readers--I use the OverDrive app). I would have to check my Kobo account to see if Kobo lets customers know that they've already purchased a book.
I thought people have posted in various places that the website ereaderiq allows you to keep wish lists (that's how some people keep track of price drops on books), but I don't know if they're only ones that are imported from Amazon or if ereaderiq lets you create new wish lists.
For your neighborhood bookstore question, sorry, I have no idea! (-:
Per flipoid and ereaderiq, you can import a wish list from Amazon, and you can also create one from scratch, or add to the one you imported. No problem. The only thing to remember is that if your Amazon list is private, it can't be imported. The solution is to change the list to public on Amazon, import it, then change it back to private.
You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.
I might try that for my wish lists but I bought a Kobo book and read it using the Kobo app on my iPad mini. Unfortunately, I prefer reading books on the Paperwhite since there's no glare and it's an easy size to hold. Sigh. So I think I'll keep buying books from Ammy. Darn it.
Thanks, everyone, for the answers. I appreciate the help. I thought the Kobo books were a special file (kepub?) but if they're epub then maybe one day I'll figure out how to do the calibre thing and be able to convert them to what I want to read at the time. I hope someone comes up with a great alternative to Ammy. I'm not sure why I'm so disgusted with them -- I'm really holding a grudge about shutting the forums down early. :-)
I buy most of my books from Kobo since my first ereader was a Kobo, and even though I use android tablets now, I've stuck with them. Yep, they download in epub format - which suits me perfectly since it's my preferred format - I use Moon+Reader Pro on my tablet for ebook reading. You can always use Calibre or some other software to convert to another format if the epubs don't suit you.
I also regularly use Smashwords. Again coz you can download in epub (they have 3 formats to choose from including epub and mobi/kindle). I started buying from then in the Kristen Ashley early days, and have kept with them.

Thanks, Neeta --- I guess what I'm wondering is, where does the Kobo book go when I buy it? Where do I find the file to be able to convert it using Calibre?
I've bought books from other sites and they've turned into an ACSM file (I think that's the right acronym) and I couldn't do anything with it when I tried to email it to my iPad. I had to read the book on my laptop, which sucked. Maybe I'll do a search on my laptop and try to find the Kobo book I bought; I didn't find a file folder that said Kobo like I have a folder that says Kindle books.
If someone knows how to purchase a book from Kobo or Smashwords and then use Calibre to change it to mobi, I'd love to hear about it.
On Kobo website they are in your books library. Click on your books and they are all there. If you download a book then it goes where ever you have your downloads to go. ie, downloads folder, my documents folder.
Just drag/drop from the download folder onto Calibre and then convert to mobi for your Kindle.

Yep, exactly. Also, occasionally a book is drm protected so you download the linkthingy and then double click to open - it converts to an ebook and opens in adobe digital editions. Then you can then drop the book file into calibre and convert it to a different format and send to your kindle. This happens for maybe only 5 - 10% of books now, usually it's a straight epub download.

Thanks -- I'll try this when I get to my home computer!
