Genre - regency with a fair bit of magic thrown in
I have been reluctant to read this book because it did not receive particularly good reviews. But I was very pleasantly surprised. I think if you start reading this book expecting a standard HR, the first few chapters would feel cheesy and overwrought. Once you realize there is magic and prophecy at work, it begins to make sense. I think the author succeeded in giving it a bit of a fairy tail feel, without it being OTT.
Plot Summary ***
Damien has just become, due to the death of his evil father, the Imperial Prince of Nvengaria. The person with all the real power, Duke Alexander, wants him dead. He believes him to be as bad as his father. But the people of Nvengaria want their Prince. Damien knows if he fulfills the prophecy of finding the long lost princess and making her his bride, that he will have the overwhelming support of his people.
The long lost princess, Penelope, turns out to be the daughter of an impoverished widowed Baroness, living in a small shire in England. Damien sweeps in, and sweeps her off her feet. Although she tries to stand up for herself, the prophecy is working against her. She cannot help but love Damien. And Damien cannot help but love her. In the mean time, the powerful Duke Alexander is throwing evil spells, mythical creatures and bands of assassins in their path.

Through all of this the H and h are trying to reach Nvengaria in time for a celebration that finishes the prophecy. They are also struggling to figure out if their love is real or only a result of the prophecy. I was surprised by the resolution. It wasn't what I expected. I was also surprised by how naughty some of the intimate scenes were. Apparently Nvengarians are very lusty and just a little bit kinky.
I like the h particularly. She was intelligent. She did her best to make thoughtful decisions, in spite of the pressures of the prophecy. I think that the character of the H was less well developed. Had the author given him just a bit more depth it would have been a five star read for me.
