I read this probably back in the 90s (maybe very late 80s), something like a Silhouette or Harlequin type book.
heroine was married to an older man who died, her husband was an older man who cared for her (maybe they never consummated and she was a virgin, I forget) The H was a friend of the husband's, he was always very contemptuous of the heroine (maybe he thought she was a gold digger?) and he made her very nervous. One scene has her so nervous that she only has eye makeup on one eye when he comes over. For some reason she/they go on a Napa wine train and romance ensues. Lots of punishing kisses and doormat behavior. I think he realizes that she's not dumb and flighty, but nervous of him and he softens.
