Please help me find this historical romance. (Solved)

This is what I remember - it’s possible that I am conflating two stories, but here goes - and I read it about ten years ago.
The hero is a lord ?earl ?marquess who marries a young debutante aged about 17 or 18. At the start of the book the heroine has been missing for several years, and some had even accused the hero of killing her. She comes back - I think she wants a divorce - and the hero follows her back to a cottage where he sees a young boy who is the spitting image of him, so he realises he has a son. He blackmails the heroine into returning to his country estate if she doesn’t want to lose her son. It transpires that not too long after the marriage, the hero found the heroine naked in bed with the brother of the villainess in a cottage on the estate. The heroine runs away and goes to Ireland, where she is taken in by an elderly Irish landowner - I think he bred horses - where she gives birth to her son. He has recently died and left his estate to the heroine. Once back at the hero’s estate, the heroine has a few ‘accidents’, and we meet the villainess who is an old friend of the hero, and a widow. It transpires that she drugged the heroine in the cottage, stripped her and put her in bed with the brother. I think he was a painter and that his sister blackmailed him into ruining the heroine’s marriage.
