The collapsing of this bridge is going to be a mess for all of us!!!! The Francis Scott Key Bridge is part of the Baltimore Beltway and part of the Port of Baltimore and named for the author of The Star Spangled Banner written by him not too far from where this bridge was hit by the huge container ship. People driving across missing!

I saw the video of the bridge collapsing and it looked like matchsticks going down! What a horrible accident but to be honest it was lucky that it happened at 1:30 AM rather than rush hour

I thought the same thing when I heard about it--could be so much worse! and yes, it's something to watch the video of it going down! Made me think of that one collapsing in I think Minneapolis some years ago--that was rush hour, wasn't it? Yes, looked it up. 2007 & yes, rush hour, August 1st. Amazingly, only 13 people died with 100 cars going into the river. Said 145 people injured--don't know how badly.
Linviolet, while parenting these two sweet gifts of life you should be proud and overflowing with love and excitement. Your children are lucky to have parents who recognize the blessing of guiding them. I'm glad you have family to help out. You've got this!
I was sleep deprived and tired, and missed this comment. I absolutely agree, my sweetest gifts are these two bundles of love. I am so lucky to have become their mom, sleep deprivation and late nights aside the moment I see a smile, the moment I see that look of absolute trust my heart and mind just loves them. Everything else is secondary until they are comfortable. I'll be taking a small week long vacation without them, in the summer, take advantage of that wedding we have to attend in Puerto Rico and just take time for ourselves.
The bridge collapsing is sad news. I only remember the time when Bush used the money allocated for the maintenance of bridges to fund the War, and how he had to admit to that once two bridges had major incidents. The fortunate part of this is that it did happen during a time where there's a small amount of traffic of residents, at that time mostly truckers are the ones in the road, I pray that the missing are found and that anyone hurt has a speedy recovery physically even if mentally it will be a longer battle.
Please know this bridge was sound. A container ship hit it. Containers weigh thousands of pounds. Expect more shortages and price hikes, especially truckers have to re-route, major hold up of supply chains.

Yep, I watched a discussion where they said Baltimore's port was the busiest on the East Coast & huge amounts of stuff come & go thru it. So yep, expect more fun, including more inflation--even from products that don't have the excuse of going thru Baltimore port. (bless'em!) I was looking at the geography, etc of the port, the bridge, etc & have to admit--doesn't seem like a great place to have a lot of huge traffic going in & out but I know very little about all that!
Someone also commented--why didn't they stop the boat? I figure that person is the same as the students that would walk out in front of my car on a icy day--dang things don't stop on a dime, you know!

I heard on TV yesterday that it takes 1/2 hr to completely stop a ship that large and that they did drop the anchor. I wonder if that could have caused the ship to swing around and hit the bridge.
Enough!!! Far left woke aholes now questioning name of bridge due to troubled past of Mr. key. Then don't sing our great anthem! First of all, most plantations with slavery owned by Democrats. Washington Post more concerned with this than loss of lives. Now want to cancel the anthem. Key helped free people!!!
Did you know Kanye West wants all Jewish people deported. Biden giving green cards to illegals...OMG I'm going to be cancelled because I did not write "newcomers". LOLOL

People died, people were injured and jobs may be lost. How about we care about them and their families and not worry about what FSK wrote in 1814. The anthem is beautiful. If you want to see a really good movie, one of my favorites, about our history in story form, watch The Sons of Liberty - Sons Of Liberty [DVD + Digital] Starring Dean Norris, Ben Barnes.
To be honest, I never did care for that anthem. I can't sing worth a darn & that sucker has parts that add to the fun! I like America the Beautiful, personally. But they didn't ask my opinion. I think what annoys me the most & it's not either song: after 9/11 they started singing God Bless America a lot. There was some talk about changing the national anthem then over to it. But that died out. However, now it's sung on most Baseball games, mainly Sundays now (used to be all of them) during the 7th inning stretch, and they do get some beautiful sounding singers in for them. A Miami Univ. Choral group sang one Sunday--glad I caught that one! Commented to Miami they should have let us know beforehand! But dang it, I loved hearing "take me out to the ball game" during the 7th inning stretch. Now, I never hear it on the tv. Guess I'll have to go to a game to actually hear it because they do sing it after GBA; but the televising folks go to commercial, bless 'em!
Oh, Natasha, I learned in one of the history classes I got to take ages ago; what's Democrats now isn't what they were back then. Actually, they were called Republicans. Names & meanings for the parties have changed over the decades. After all, no way the black folks, when they finally got the right to vote, would have voted for the folks that fought to own them & not let them go. And yeah, Kanye West is an idiot---but I never did like his music... I'm waiting to see the proof about Combs & human or sex trafficking. To make all those raids, etc, figure there's something.

Natasha, to what articles are you referring? I was curious, so I did a quick search and came across this one.
But it's a simple, factual, non-inflammatory article that presents a balanced, brief outline of Keys' life and simply mentions that a few organizations have suggested in the past that because of Keys' active support for slavery, using his name for public sites should be reconsidered.
Where are you getting the hysteria and anger you present? It's certainly not in the Washington Post article I saw.
Personally, I think Keys' song is not easy to sing in tune (but, then, pretty much nothing is for me; I have a singing voice which has several times made small children lovingly ask me to please *not* sing to them!) and I doubt many people know more than a third of the lyrics. Isn't it kind of a running joke how often singers have fudged the lyrics when they're singing the anthem?

The hysteria is that there is no reason to bring this up in the 1st place!!!
