Finished reading The Mad Earl's Bride by Loretta Chase, a short book and part of the Scoundrels series. Enjoyed this book and am glad I have so many of hers that I have yet to read. Also returned to listening to The Duke Undone by Joanna Lowell, I wasn't enjoying it when I started two weeks ago but on a second attempt it is much better, helps if the mind is not distracted when you try to listen .

I finished rereading Book 2 of Nichole Van's "Brotherhood of the Black Tartan, Romancing the Rake which I enjoyed. Then I went on to a Joan Smith traditional Regency, A Country Wooing which I also enjoyed a lot. The hero, Alex, is a second son, a good guy overshadowed by his brother, Charlie, a charming wastrel. Charlie is the one Anne has loved since she was a child, but Charlie has died and Alex doesn't appeal to her. Yet.
bonnieg I also just finished the second book and it was a great read, I preferred it to book 1 so I have high hopes for the rest of the series. The heroine Sophronia Sorrow was a treasure, loved her wit and spirit. Also felt for Rafe and was relieved that the two managed to overcome the issues with his nasty father and have a happy ending to their romance. The Duke Undone was also an excellent listen, Mary Jane Wells can do no wrong when narrating, she has become a favorite of mine for historical romances. Both of these books will end up as my top reads/listens for the month. Sadly, not having as much fun with my next read Talk to the Paw by Melinda Metz but its always a struggle starting something new after finishing something you really enjoyed.
I'm reading a series of Mary Balogh's that I know I read ages ago in pbk format but I'm not remembering them so like reading them for the first time! It's her web series; I'm currently in #1 Gilded Web And I'm more than a bit annoyed at the h! Yes, what happened wasn't her fault; yes, how her father raised her was abusive, but dang it get out of this lamenting "he(the H) forced the marriage on her, if only she could be free, etc" When is she going to wake up and realize that in her age, she had no choice; looking at the family she's marrying into, will she ever realize that her "Papa" was wrong, abusive & a tyrant, and will she ever realize what a good guy the H is? Of course she will, it's a Balogh so guaranteed happy ending, but I'm halfway thru & I can't tell that she's developed at all! Hopefully, soon!
bluebear I have been meaning to read Chase's "Mad Earl's Bride" and was glad to hear you liked it. I also thought Sophronia Sorrow was a great heroine, and Rafe is such a good guy. I was really surprised the way Van ended book 2. It was perfect.
I finished Deb Marlowe's Love Me, Lord Tender, a novella that I enjoyed. The hero has been called "Lord Terror" by the gossips because he is trying to slow down the spending of his female relatives to save his impoverished estate. He knows he needs a wealthy wife but with this nickname, no one wants to associate with him. Our heroine, Lady Hope sees he is really a good guy and begins calling him "Lord Tender," which William is not crazy about either. It's an entertaining, fast read.

So mafia inspired romance isn't my cup of tea usually but for the last year or so I have given it a shot, some where hyped and for me they were duds, but I found an author whose book caught my interest, I enjoyed it completely and I am now on book #2 of the series, they can be read as standalone though and #2 so far is the one I love because of the characters and how opposite they are.
I'm struggling with #2 Web of Love by Mary Balogh. In #1 Gilded Web, the h finally realized she was being selfish (foolish?) at the end! This one almost feels the same. So I digressed & have stepped into another title for a bit. I'll probably go back in a little bit.
ETA: I couldn't remember what I was reading when I wrote the above, but have been reading since & can now say! During my listing/weeding the bags of pbks (heck of a project, believe me!) I discovered that I had one of Mary Balogh's Survivor's Club in pbk but not in ebk. I used an Amazon gift card to buy it (Only Enchanting Survivor's Club #4) and started reading it. Then I was reminded of another, (Stephanie Lauren's Desire's Prize) and read it, have now finished Only Enchanting, & I think I'll start #7 of Survivor's Club: Only Beloved. Maybe after that I'll go back to the Web series, but I don't know. Not really liking them... Not like I'm lacking books to read, after all! And going thru the bags calls many more to mind!
For a good laugh I can highly recommend Can I Give My Husband Back by Kristen Bailey. A chic lit romance about a woman who finally divorces her cheating slime of a husband, not really sure why she put up with him for so long. Follow as she recovers and rebuilds her confidence and starts over. There are some seriously crazy antics with plenty of zippy lines. Her zany sister Lucy was a bit over the top for me and this is one family who should probably stay away from the booze, mayhem tends to follow. Book could do with an editor as there are some jarring grammatical errors. I look forward to reading more in the series.

I finished book 2 of Kate Archer's "The Duke's Pack" series, The Marquess' Daring Wager which I enjoyed, There were some pretty funny moments in the story, and it mostly takes place at a house party--always a favorite setting for me, but there isn't a lot of romance. We see Sybil and Richard's attraction starting in book 1, but they don't seem to spend much time together in book 2. Sybil tells Richard her father will never consent to their courtship because a long-standing feud between their fathers. Richard decides he needs to soften up Sybil's dad and win him over. They more he tries, the less he succeeds. Meanwhile, Sybil, being pretty much ignored, thinks Richard is attracted to someone else. It's sort of a comedy of errors, and although I'm not crazy about the great misunderstanding trope, humor provided by some secondary characters helped save the book for me.

Take me with you! I grew up loving James Herriot's books, have read them all and still own the paperbacks, I have very few books left on my shelves but these I kept. The original TV series was also a family favorite.
